How to create an Ombre Nail Design?
Ombre is a French word that means “shaded” or “gradually changing color”, and it is the hot new trend in the world of manicures. The “ombre” look is created by applying multiple layers of a lighter color over a darker color. The layers of polish are then painted on one nail at a time, gradually changing the color from dark to light. An ombre mani can look complicated, but it’s actually pretty easy to achieve. Here we’ll walk you through the steps to creating an ombre nail design that can be worn to a wedding, date night or even just with jeans and a t-shirt.
Most Popular Ombre Nail Art
Ombre nails are all the rage right now. Whether you like your color gradients in your hair or on your nails, they are becoming quite popular. You can have any color you want as long as it is ombre! If you are new to ombre nails, you might be wondering how to do it. It’s super easy! I will show you three different ways. The first way is to use makeup sponges. They are inexpensive and if you only need one or two, you can pick them up at CVS or Walgreens. You can use a makeup sponge to create a gradient effect on your nails.
It is super quick. The first way to do it is to get a makeup sponge. You can use your makeup sponge to apply the top color of the ombre, the one that is on the tip of the nail. You are now going to sponge on some clear polish and wipe it off with a paper towel. (I use a disposable paper towel because I don’t want to use my manicure stick and I don’t want to put it in my purse.) You’re going to do the same thing for the second layer. You are going to go from dark to light. You can stop at the third layer or keep going if you want. It is up to you!
The second way to do it is to use your nail varnish brush. You can get your nail varnish brush at any beauty supply store. If you want a dark color at the tip of your nail, put a drop of color at the bottom of the nail. With a little paint thinner, thin the brush and dab on more color. Continue to thin the brush and build the color at the tip of the nail. You can stop when you get to the tip of your nail and your nail will be ombre!
Ombre nails are one of the most popular nail art designs of the past year. It started with celebrities rocking the trend, and then it blew up on Instagram, Pinterest and Tumblr. Ombre nails are so easy to do and can be created with a variety of different looks. One of my favorite ways to do ombre nails is to apply different shades of blue, gray or purple to the tips of the nails. I love how the colors blend into each other for a unique and fashionable look. If you love ombre, but want to try something different and more subtle, this Ombre Nail Design tutorial is perfect for you!
The third way to do it is to get a nail buffer (this is like the name says, a buffer) and some nail polish. The nail polish you use has to be one that’s easy to remove and that doesn’t dry hard. I use OPI. This is where the fun begins! With your nail buffer, you are going to paint your nail white. You are going to take a strip of your nail polish and paint it with one brush. I use a thin brush. As you get closer to the tip of your nail, you are going to thin your brush. On the very tip of the nail, you are going to paint the tip in one color and on the side of the nail, you are going to paint a lighter color of the same color. You can change your colors as many times as you want. Remember to thin your brush with a little polish thinner as you get closer to the tip of your nail. You are now finished! You can wear your ombre for a day or you can make a design on the side of your nails and go home and paint the design. Whatever you want to do!
Ombre Nail Design Tutorial
If you love this ombre nail design as much as I do, you can create it with the following supplies:
- -1 Pack of Seche Vite Gel Topcoat (to help create a smooth and shiny manicure)
- -Nail Art Paint
- -Nail File or Toothpick
- -Nail Clippers
- -Black Sharpie or Regular Marker
- -Nail Art Pen
- -Drill (optional)
- -Nail Art Brush
- -Stainless Steel Scissors
STEP 1: Prepare Your Nails
I like to apply a base coat in the traditional dark color for the tips of the nail. I use Seche Vite to help create a smooth manicure and I apply this with a slow steady motion.
Start at the cuticle edge and slowly work your way to the free edge of the nail. You want to make sure the nail is completely coated and that the base coat completely covers the nail and no bare nails will remain.
STEP 2: Apply a Layer of the Lightest Color
Once your nail is completely covered, use the tip of a nail file or a tootpick and gently work into the paint to create small vertical creases. Apply one to two thin layers of paint to the free edge of the nail. You want to make sure the color in the center of the nail is lighter than the color on the tips, so try not to apply more than two thin layers. You also don’t want to add too much paint, otherwise you may smudge it and make it a bit more difficult to achieve the ombre look.
STEP 3: Apply a Medium Color
Now you have all the basic steps down. Begin by using a nail file or a toothpick and work into the paint in the center to create a lighter color than the previous step. Then, you can begin adding layers of darker colors to the tip to create the ombre design. Make sure that the light colors are applied in between the layers of darker colors to create that perfect blend.
STEP 4: Add a Top Coat
Once the nail is completely dry, topcoat the entire nail to finish off the design.
